How to set goals and reach these?
I recently saw on television a top-caliber athlete being asked by a reporter about his personal success-tactic that enabled him to achieve record after record in competitions. And the answer of the athlete was something like: “Hard work, a lot of training and most important: applying my goal setting strategies”. And in fact, the techniques of finding and reaching aims seems to be some kind of an open secret that is being applied mostly by athletes, very successful businessmen and all kinds of other individuals that are wealthy.
I have attempted to dig deeper into this topic to reveal some excellent strategies on how to set yourself goals and even more important how to reach these properly. When it comes to finding aims and objectives we can distinguish between short-term and long-term goals:
- First of all it is very important to set goals that are clearly defined, so that you are constantly able to measure the progress and enabled to change the direction, in order to achieve an aim. This can be done by charting your progress, since it will help you to keep on track on the final realization of your target. Furthermore it enables you to stay motivated as there will no feelings arise such as pointlessness.
- Another powerful tactic is to find out what you really want to achieve in your personal as well as professional life. By “what you really want” I mean visions, objectives and aspirations that you really desire to achieve. There is neither space for goals that you are not fully committed nor aims that have been dictated to you by another person or society. You need to be aware of the fact that you will be able to do whatever it takes that is necessary to reach a dream if you are totally committed to it. In contrast to this you will only do what is absolutely necessary, if you are trying to accomplish an aim that you are not devoted to. Once you have found targets that you are committed to you can think of what kind of short- and long term goals you´ll need in order to reach these objectives.
- A very powerful tip that I would like to recommend to you is that you break your goal down into some smaller and easier to reach aims. This means that you have one major target that you will accomplish once you have reached all the minor goals. This technique helps you to stay motivated on a long term, since you will soon see the first results and have reached after a while your first minor targets.
Let´s have a little closer look at short term goals. An excellent way to have aims that are short termed can be by having a set of daily, weekly or even monthly objectives. You can achieve this by setting at least one target for the next day, that you will try to accomplish. While you set yourself some goals that are short termed you should keep an eye to the fact that these will help you later to reach your major goal. Furthermore, this tactic will boost your motivation since you will reach day after day at least one specific aim that is giving you a powerful feeling of accomplishment.
- Keep on focusing on your attitude, since it is very important when it comes to the difference of failure or success in the attempt to accomplish an aim. Just ask yourself the honest question if any part of you could possible hold you back at the moment from reaching your visions. This could be due to fears and anxieties or other reasons. If your attitude has become an obstacle in the goal reaching process you will have to attempt to change it to a more positive way that enables you to succeed in pursuing an objective.
- When it comes to phrasing your aspirations you should also make sure that you add a time limitation. This helps you to stay focused on your specific aim and not loosing track on it. Another positive side-effect of this is that you will develop excellent time management skills that can be really helpful.
